About the Instructor

Thuy Tu is a native Vietnamese speaker from Hanoi with over 20 years of international experience in applied linguistics, curriculum development, and second/foreign language education. She holds a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and a doctoral degree in Multilingual/Multicultural Education from George Mason University. With a strong background in Vietnamese linguistics, culture, and language pedagogy, Thuy specializes in creating supportive, interactive, and learner-centered classes for adult students. Since early 2024, she has taught Vietnamese language and culture to U.S.-based learners both online and in person, helping students build confidence while respecting their individual goals, identities, and learning styles.

Who This Course Is For

This course is designed for students who have already completed a complete beginner Vietnamese course or have some basic knowledge of the language. It is ideal for learners who can recognize Vietnamese tones, use simple greetings, introduce themselves, and form very basic sentences, but still need more practice speaking, listening, and building confidence.

This class is a good fit for adult learners who want to continue developing their Vietnamese for travel, family communication, heritage learning, cultural connection, or personal enrichment.

What You’ll Learn

This course helps students move beyond the very basics and begin using Vietnamese more comfortably in everyday situations. Students will continue strengthening pronunciation and tones while expanding their vocabulary, grammar, and conversational skills.

In this course, students will practice how to:

Speak more confidently using simple Vietnamese sentences
Ask and answer questions about daily life
Talk about family, hobbies, routines, food, and personal preferences
Use common verbs, adjectives, and everyday expressions
Understand basic Vietnamese sentence patterns
Improve listening comprehension through guided practice
Continue developing accurate pronunciation and tone recognition
Participate in short conversations with classmates

The course also includes cultural topics that help students understand how Vietnamese is used in real-life contexts, including politeness, forms of address, family relationships, food culture, and everyday communication habits.
