  3. You are interested in learning a new language and expanding your cognitive abilities, studying Vietnamese would be a good choice.

  4. You are planning to travel to Vietnam or other parts of Southeast Asia, studying Vietnamese would be useful as it would allow you to navigate the country more easily and have a more immersive experience.

  5. You are looking for a unique and less commonly studied language, Vietnamese is an excellent choice. As a less-commonly studied language, studying Vietnamese can increase language diversity and cultural understanding in an increasingly interconnected world.

What are the dialects of Vietnamese and how different are they?

Vietnamese has several dialects, which can be broadly grouped into northern, central, and southern dialects. These dialects have different pronunciations, vocabulary, and grammar.

  1. Northern dialect: This dialect is spoken in the northern regions of Vietnam, including Hanoi. It is known for its distinct tonal system, which is different from the central and southern dialects. It is considered as the standard dialect.

  2. Central dialect: This dialect is spoken in the central regions of Vietnam, including the cities of Hue and Danang. It is known for its distinct intonation, which is different from the northern and southern dialects.

  3. Southern dialect: This dialect is spoken in the southern regions of Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City. It is known for its distinct vocabulary and grammar, which are different from the northern and central dialects.

Overall, while the dialects are mutually intelligible, there are enough differences that it can be challenging for speakers of one dialect to understand speakers of the other dialect without practice. However, the northern dialect is considered as the standard dialect and used in the education and official communication.

We offer group and individual Vietnamese classes on Zoom.
