👥 Who This Course Is For

This course is designed for students who already have a solid foundation in Spanish and are ready to move beyond basic conversations into more natural, detailed, and spontaneous communication.

You should already be comfortable discussing familiar topics, asking and answering everyday questions, and using common verb forms in the present and past. At the Low Intermediate level, the focus shifts from simply forming correct sentences to becoming more flexible and confident when expressing ideas.

This course is ideal for students who want to improve their Spanish for travel, work, family connections, cultural interests, or simply the satisfaction of becoming a more independent Spanish speaker.

🎯 What You’ll Learn

In this Low Intermediate Spanish course, you’ll expand your grammatical knowledge while developing the vocabulary and conversational skills needed for more meaningful communication.

Topics and skills may include:

• Using the preterite and imperfect to talk about past events, experiences, and background information

• Describing people, places, situations, and experiences in greater detail

• Talking about future plans, intentions, goals, and possibilities

• Expressing opinions, agreement, disagreement, and personal preferences

• Using object pronouns and more complex sentence structures

• Expanding your knowledge of common irregular verbs

• Connecting ideas using words and expressions that make speech sound more natural

• Asking more detailed questions and responding spontaneously

• Understanding longer conversations and spoken Spanish at a more natural pace

• Building practical vocabulary for travel, relationships, work, culture, and everyday situations

Conversation is an important part of every class. Students are encouraged to use Spanish actively rather than simply memorize grammar rules.

🧠 Classes also incorporate cultural topics from the Spanish-speaking world, including regional language differences, traditions, food, music, literature, travel, and everyday communication. Understanding these cultural contexts helps students communicate more naturally and confidently.

👩‍🏫 About the Instructor

Ana is a Peruvian native and currently resides in El Cerrito, California. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Davis. Her teaching philosophy values diversity and incorporates students’ individual needs, while her pedagogy focuses on developing both cultural awareness and linguistic competence.

Ana has been teaching Spanish as a second language, Spanish to heritage speakers, and Latin American literature for more than 20 years. Since moving to California in 2002, she has served as a Lecturer at California State University East Bay, Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of San Diego, Associate Instructor at UC Davis, Spanish tutor at Berkeley City College, and Spanish instructor at several high schools in the San Francisco East Bay.

Ana is a passionate educator committed to inspiring her students to appreciate language learning and the unique cultures they bring to the classroom. She is also a published poet and the author of four books, with additional poems and essays appearing in collaborative collections.

In her spare time, Ana enjoys cooking, reading poetry and fiction, writing poetry, going to the beach, and hiking in nature.
