👥 Who This Course Is For
This online Complete Beginner European Portuguese course is designed for students with little to no prior knowledge of Portuguese. If you’ve never studied Portuguese before—or if you know only a handful of words—this course will give you the essential foundation you need.

It’s perfect for absolute beginners, travelers preparing for a trip to Portugal, or anyone curious about exploring Portuguese language and culture from the ground up.

🎯 What You’ll Learn
In this course, you’ll build a strong foundation in Portuguese for everyday situations. You will:

  • Learn common greetings, polite expressions, and essential survival phrases

  • Develop basic listening and speaking skills for travel and conversation

  • Master numbers, days of the week, and simple introductions

  • Begin building vocabulary related to food, family, and daily life

  • Practice pronunciation with interactive speaking activities

🧠 Grammar Topics Include:

  • The alphabet and Portuguese pronunciation

  • Introduction to present tense of essential verbs (ser, estar, ter, ir)

  • Basic sentence structure and word order

  • Gender of nouns, articles, and adjective agreement

  • Simple yes/no questions and negation

Through fun, interactive activities and cultural notes, you’ll start speaking Portuguese from the very first class.

By the End of the Course, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Greet others and introduce yourself confidently

  • Ask and answer basic questions (Where are you from? What do you like?)

  • Order food and drinks at a café or restaurant

  • Count, tell the time, and talk about simple daily routines

  • Understand and respond to slow, clear Portuguese in common situations

  • Transition smoothly into our Low Beginner course

👩‍🏫 About the Instructor
Elsa Alves was born in Bragança and has lived in Lisbon since 2010. She holds a degree in Portuguese Studies and a master’s in Portuguese Literature, where she wrote a dissertation on language and gender hybridity in Raduan Nassar’s Lavoura Arcaica, awarded the grade of 19/20. She has been teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language (A1–C2) for over nine years, adopting a multidisciplinary approach that combines grammar, speaking, writing, and authentic materials such as advertisements, news articles, restaurant menus, songs, and literary texts tailored to each level. Elsa has taught intensive courses for international students, prepared learners for the CAPLE and DIPLE exams, and, alongside teaching, works as a proofreader—most recently revising Manual da Técnica da Máscara by Filipe Crawford. With a background that extends beyond teaching, Elsa has collaborated with cultural and literary magazines such as Gerador, Nervo, Lote, and Tlön. In 2022, she published her poetry book O sol abate-se, within the Claro Enigma series. Recognized for her dedication, dynamism, and passion for language and literature, she is committed to sharing her love of Portuguese with her students.
