This in-person Mandarin course is designed specifically for middle and high school students who are complete beginners—with no prior experience or only limited exposure to the language. Whether your teen is learning Mandarin for school, family connections, cultural interest, or future travel, this fun and interactive class provides a solid foundation in a supportive small-group environment.

📖 What Students Will Learn
This course introduces students to the essential building blocks of Mandarin through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Your teen will begin to:
Pronounce Mandarin using Pinyin (phonetic spelling)
Build useful everyday vocabulary and simple phrases
Understand basic grammar and sentence structure
Begin reading and writing essential Chinese characters (Hanzi)
Develop correct tones and pronunciation habits
Explore Chinese cultural norms and everyday communication styles
🌍 Themes and Topics Include
Introducing yourself and meeting new people
Talking about school, family, and hobbies
Numbers, time, and calendar basics
Food, drinks, and ordering in restaurants
Culturally appropriate phrases and polite expressions

Each session includes:
Live, interactive teaching from an experienced instructor
Partner speaking activities and real-life role-play
Listening and vocabulary games
Guided character writing and reading practice
Cultural lessons and group discussion
Optional light homework to review weekly lessons
✅ By the End of the Course, Students Will Be Able To:
Use basic Mandarin in common social and classroom settings
Read and write an introductory set of characters
Ask and answer simple questions
Recognize beginner-level grammar and structure
Move confidently into a High Beginner Mandarin course

Our Mandarin instructors are trained and highly experienced in working with teen learners. Many are native speakerswith advanced degrees in Chinese language, linguistics, or teaching Mandarin as a second language. They specialize in creating age-appropriate lessons that are both educational and engaging, helping young learners build confidence while having fun.

This course runs in person in Berkeley from August 22 to September 26.
A minimum of three students is required for the class to run the full six weeks.
If only two students enroll, the course will still run but will be shortened to five weeks.
