👥 Who This Course Is For
This in-person Mandarin course is designed for middle and high school students who have already taken a Complete Beginner course or have some prior exposure to Mandarin. It’s ideal for learners ready to deepen their skills in a supportive small-group setting that emphasizes confidence, communication, and cultural understanding.
If you're located in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, or San Jose, this course offers teens the chance to build on their foundation through real-life practice and guided instruction in a dynamic, in-person environment.
📖 What Students Will Learn
This course helps students progress beyond the basics by introducing more vocabulary, sentence variety, and character recognition. Students will:
Expand everyday vocabulary and useful expressions
Improve pronunciation and fluency using Pinyin
Read and write a growing set of Chinese characters (Hanzi)
Engage in guided conversations and listening practice
Form full sentences and ask/answer questions naturally
Learn cultural context to use language with accuracy and respect
🌍 Themes and Topics Include
Talking about school life and daily routines
Describing people, places, and preferences
Making simple requests and expressing opinions
Understanding classroom instructions and schedules
Exploring Chinese holidays, food, and customs
💬 What to Expect
Each class includes:
Interactive, in-person lessons with a skilled instructor
Speaking practice in pairs and small groups
Vocabulary and grammar activities
Reading short texts and writing simple characters
Engaging cultural topics, games, and discussions
Light weekly homework to review and reinforce content
✅ By the End of the Course, Students Will Be Able To:
Hold short conversations using complete sentences
Read and write a wider range of characters
Speak with greater fluency and correct tone usage
Understand beginner-level grammar in context
Continue into a Mandarin High Beginner course with confidence

Our Mandarin instructors are experienced and enthusiastic educators—many are native speakers with advanced training in Chinese language, education, or applied linguistics. They specialize in working with teens and know how to make lessons age-appropriate, engaging, and effective. Students benefit from a friendly classroom atmosphere where participation and progress are celebrated.
💡 Important Notes
This course meets in person in Downtown Berkeley from August 22 to September 26.
There will be no class on July 4 due to the holiday.
A minimum of three students is required for the class to run the full six weeks.
If only two students enroll, the course will still run but will be shortened to five weeks.
