Location: Polyglottist Language Academy, Berkeley campus

This class is ideal for students who have completed a beginner Japanese course or have basic familiarity with the language—such as greetings, essential vocabulary, and simple expressions. It’s the perfect next step for learners who want to deepen their skills in a structured, supportive, and in-person environment.

Whether you live in Berkeley, commute from Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, or Napa, this course gives you the chance to learn in a warm classroom setting with ample speaking practice and cultural immersion.

📖 What You’ll Learn
This course builds upon your beginner foundation by introducing essential grammar points, expanding vocabulary, and strengthening speaking confidence through real-world communication. You’ll learn how to:

  • Construct sentences using basic Japanese grammar

  • Use everyday vocabulary related to food, shopping, directions, and introductions

  • Practice asking and answering questions in conversation

  • Improve listening skills and pronunciation

  • Read and write hiragana (and optionally katakana) with guidance

Lessons are designed to be highly interactive, with a focus on communication and cultural context. Each session includes partner work, group speaking activities, and cultural insights woven into the content.

🌍 Cultural Themes and Topics Include:

  • Everyday etiquette and politeness in Japanese culture

  • Common restaurant and market interactions

  • Travel-related phrases and city navigation

  • Introductions and personal background sharing

💬 What to Expect
Each class includes:

  • Live speaking practice in pairs and groups

  • Listening and pronunciation exercises

  • Short reading and writing activities

  • Cultural discussion based on real-life situations

  • Regular review and feedback to track your progress

✅ By the End of the Course, You’ll Be Able To:

  • Speak more confidently in daily situations

  • Form basic sentences with clarity and accuracy

  • Understand slow, clear spoken Japanese

  • Write and recognize basic hiragana

👩‍🏫 About the Instructor
Mari, originally from Gunma Prefecture, Japan, is a certified Japanese language instructor through Seisa University in Yokohama. She holds a degree in French Literature from Meiji Gakuin University and later studied International Economics in Toronto.\n\nWith experience living and working in Tokyo, Toronto, Singapore, and Boston, Mari brings a rich global perspective to her teaching. Since settling in the Bay Area in 2005, she has taught Japanese to both children and adults in classroom and online settings. Mari is known for her warm, encouraging, and student-centered approach. Her lessons are tailored, culturally rich, and always designed to build confidence—making every student feel supported and engaged.

  • The course runs from July 7th to August 11th at our Berkeley campus.

  • A minimum of three students is required for the course to run the full six weeks.

  • If only two students enroll, the class will still run but will be shortened to five weeks.
