This course is designed for students who have studied Japanese for about 6–8 months and are ready to build upon their foundation. It’s ideal for learners who can already read hiragana and katakana, hold short conversations, and are now eager to advance toward more complex grammar, richer vocabulary, and smoother communication.
If you're based in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, or Napa, you can join us online and continue your learning journey in a supportive and engaging class led by an experienced instructor.
📖 What You’ll Learn
In this course, students will review key beginner grammar and expand their skills with more nuanced expressions. Lessons will emphasize speaking, listening, reading, and writing equally, and you’ll start to:
Describe past events and daily routines using correct verb forms
Express preferences, comparisons, and polite requests
Develop conversation flow with transitions and sentence connectors
Understand and apply more formal/informal speech distinctions
Improve your confidence and accuracy when speaking
Lessons are practical and culturally grounded, helping you communicate more naturally in everyday situations.

Talking about your schedule and past experiences
Making plans and polite requests
Shopping, ordering, and asking for help
Cultural etiquette and expressions in context
Dialogues, pair work, and role-play for fluency building

Each class includes:
Interactive live instruction and guided conversation practice
Grammar and vocabulary explained through examples
Speaking and listening activities in pairs or groups
Cultural notes, videos, and real-life application exercises
Weekly homework to reinforce learning between classes

👩🏫 About the Instructor
Mari, originally from Gunma Prefecture, Japan, is a certified Japanese language instructor through Seisa University in Yokohama. She holds a degree in French Literature from Meiji Gakuin University and later studied International Economics in Toronto. With experience living and working in Tokyo, Toronto, Singapore, and Boston, Mari brings a rich global perspective to her teaching. Since settling in the Bay Area in 2005, she has taught Japanese to both children and adults in classroom and online settings. Mari is known for her warm, encouraging, and student-centered approach. Her lessons are tailored, culturally rich, and always designed to build confidence—making every student feel supported and engaged.
💡 Important Notes
This course runs via Zoom.
A minimum of three students is required for the class to run the full six weeks.
If only two students enroll, the course will still run but will be shortened to five weeks.
