👥 Who This Course Is For
This course is designed for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of Japanese. If you have never studied Japanese before—or only know a few words or phrases—this class will help you build a strong foundation step by step in a friendly, supportive small-group environment.
📖 What You’ll Learn
Students will begin developing basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Japanese. You’ll learn Japanese pronunciation, essential Hiragana characters, simple sentence structure, greetings, everyday expressions, self-introductions, basic questions, numbers, dates, time, and practical phrases for everyday situations such as ordering food, shopping, and simple conversation.

Each class includes live, interactive instruction, clear explanations of grammar and pronunciation, guided speaking practice, step-by-step introduction to Hiragana, cultural insights, and light homework to help reinforce what you learn between classes. The small-group format allows students to receive personal attention while building confidence at a comfortable pace.
✅ By the End of the Course, You’ll Be Able To:
By the end of the course, students will be able to use basic Japanese greetings and expressions, introduce themselves, ask and answer simple questions, read and write a first set of Hiragana characters, understand basic sentence patterns, and feel ready to continue into a Japanese Low Beginner course.
👩‍🏫 About the Instructor
Mari was born in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, and graduated from Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo with a degree in French literature before studying International Economics in Toronto. She has lived and worked in Tokyo, Toronto, Singapore, Boston, and the Bay Area, and has over six years of experience teaching Japanese to both children and adults. She recently completed the Japanese Language Teacher Training Course at Seisa University in Yokohama and earned her certification as a Japanese language teacher. Mari creates supportive, engaging lessons tailored to students’ levels and goals, combining clear instruction with humor, cultural insight, and an encouraging teaching style.
