This class is designed for advanced Italian learners who love literature and want to refine their language skills through meaningful, thought-provoking discussions. If you’re comfortable with complex grammar and can follow extended conversations, this course offers the perfect opportunity to explore Italian short stories, authors, and themes in their original language. Occasional longer works may be introduced depending on student interest.
It’s ideal for those who enjoy reading, want to build a richer vocabulary, and are curious about Italy’s literary voices and cultural nuances.

The heart of this course is reading and discussion. Each week, we’ll explore a short story or selected passage by a modern or classic Italian author. You’ll analyze characters, themes, and language while gaining a deeper understanding of Italian history, culture, and expression.
Discussions will be guided but flexible, giving students space to share ideas, raise questions, and build fluency through thoughtful conversation.

Francesca L. is a native of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Italy’s northeastern corner. With a Master’s in Modern Languages and Literature from the University of Trieste and classical training in Latin and Ancient Greek, she brings deep literary insight to every session.
She has taught Italian at Stanford University’s Bechtel International Center and completed a teaching specialization from Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia. Francesca’s classes are known for their intellectual warmth, cultural richness, and lively discussion.
