👥 Who This Course Is For
This course is designed for complete beginners with little or no previous experience studying Spanish. No prior knowledge is required.
If you have always wanted to learn Spanish but are not sure where to begin, this class provides a structured and supportive introduction to the language. You will start with the fundamentals and gradually build the vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and conversational skills needed to communicate in simple everyday situations.
Whether you are learning Spanish for travel, work, family, cultural interests, or personal growth, this small-group course offers a welcoming environment in which to develop a strong foundation.
🎯 What You’ll Learn
In this course, you’ll begin building your foundation in Spanish language and culture, including:
Spanish pronunciation and essential sound patterns
Greetings, introductions, and common everyday expressions
Numbers, dates, time, and basic personal information
Asking and answering simple questions
Essential vocabulary for everyday situations
Basic sentence structure and introductory grammar
Common present-tense verbs and expressions
Talking about yourself, your family, interests, and daily activities
Listening and speaking practice through simple dialogues
🧠 Each class also incorporates cultural insights from the Spanish-speaking world, helping you understand not only the language but also the people, traditions, customs, and everyday situations in which Spanish is used.
✅ By the End of the Course, You’ll Be Able To:
Introduce yourself and exchange basic personal information
Use common greetings and everyday expressions
Ask and answer simple questions
Understand and use essential beginner vocabulary
Form basic Spanish sentences
Talk briefly about yourself, your interests, and everyday activities
Understand simple spoken Spanish in familiar situations
Participate in short beginner-level conversations
Feel prepared to continue to the Low Beginner Spanish level
👩🏫 About the Instructor
Ana is a Peruvian native and currently resides in El Cerrito, California. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Davis. Her teaching philosophy values diversity and incorporates students’ individual needs. Her pedagogy focuses on the development of both cultural awareness and linguistic competence.
Ana has been teaching Spanish as a second language, Spanish to heritage speakers, and Latin American literature for more than 20 years. Since moving to California in 2002, Ana has served as a Lecturer at California State University East Bay, Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of San Diego, Associate Instructor at UC Davis, Spanish tutor at Berkeley City College, and Spanish instructor at several high schools in the SF East Bay.
Ana is a passionate educator committed to inspiring her students to appreciate language learning and the unique cultures they bring to their communities. She is also a published poet and author of four books, with additional poems and essays appearing in collaborative collections. In her spare time, Ana enjoys cooking, reading poetry and fiction, writing poetry, going to the beach, and hiking in nature.
