Course Objectives: This beginning course is designed to cultivate understanding of philosophy and science behind hangeul (한글) making in history, to develop linguistic skills in Korean alphabets (한글) including consonants, double consonants, simple vowles, diphthongs, combinations of consonants and vowels; to understand a concept of syllable-building blocks; to understand pronunciation rules; to ultimately enhance competence of reading 한글 without going back to romanization of pronunciation. Students will learn basic greeting expressions in Korean by the week 6 of Beginning 1 Korean course.


Week 1: Greetings, Introduction, & PPT Presentation on History, Culture, and Philosophy of Hangeul

a) Greetings and Self-Intro in English and in 한글.

b) Introduction to History, Culture, and Philosophy behind 한글.

c) Saying Good-bye in 한글

Week 2: Consonants (단자음 single & 쌍자음 double)

a) Introduction to Consonants (single & double) and Pronunciation Rules

b) Learn how to say your name and Thank you.

Week 3: Vowels (단모음 single & 복모음 diphthongs)

a) Introduction to vowels (모음) and pronunciation

b) Learn how to say I am sorry.

Week 4 - Week 5: Combination of Consonants (자음) & Vowels (모음)

a) Introduction to 자음과 모음 combination

b) Understanding the combination and pronunciation

c) Introduction to prop (support) final sound in a syllable block

Week 6: Words and Expressions

a) Practice reading words based on pronunciation rules

b) Introduction to useful expressions and practice reading them with 선생님 (Alice) and classmates
