Language Levels at Polyglottist Language Academy

I know which language I want to learn, now what? How do I know which class I should sign up for at Polyglottist Language Academy?

We offer eight beginner levels for all languages except Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Tagalog, and Vietnamese which require 12 levels. Each level is six weeks long (6 hours of instruction). Below you can see all the levels we offer for each language. If you start as a complete beginner at Polyglottist Language Academy, you can start with the first level and follow the sequence. If you have studied the language of your choice somewhere else, please read the description of each level and sign up for a class based on the amount of instruction you have received.

French Language Classes

1. FRENCH BEGINNER 1

French Beginner 1 is for complete beginners with no knowledge of French. Students enrolled in this class will learn how to talk about themselves, their families, their interests, etc. Students will also learn basic grammar including sentence structure, articles, adjectives, and present tense. Additionally, students will be introduced to French culture.

2. FRENCH BEGINNER 2

This class is a continuation of the French beginner 1 class at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you took French somewhere else, please sign up for this class if you have taken 2-3 months of French (approximately 8 - 10 hours of instruction).

3. FRENCH BEGINNER 3

This is the third part of the French Beginner 1 level. If you are coming from another school, sign up for this class if you have had approximately 16-18 hours of instruction in French.

4. FRENCH BEGINNER 4

In order to enroll in this class, students are advised to be able to comfortably conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the present tense, to be able to use the Futur proche and the Futur simple, and to know reflexive verbs in the present tense. Students need to be able to describe themselves, their families, interests, professional life, their favorite foods, and everyday routine. They also should be able to order food at a French cafe and buy groceries. This class is conducted entirely in French in order to provide an immersive experience.

5. FRENCH BEGINNER 5

This class is for students who took French four sessions of French at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you took French somewhere else, sign up for this class, if you took approximately 50 hours of French ( eight months). In this class, students will learn vocabulary and grammar to shop for food, order in a restaurant, talk about meals, and about past actions. Students will also talk about where they live (describe their house, neighborhood etc.). They will study French through activities that will allow them to discover the language and the culture.

6. REVISE YOUR FRENCH

This class is open to students of any level, from beginner students to more advanced students who want to refresh their French.

In this class, the primary objective is to provide students with the tools and skills to get by in a French speaking country. Students will practice dialogues in order to enhance their speaking skills and complete activities which will help build their vocabulary.

During the first session, students will learn or review how to greet people and how to provide personal information in order to buy tickets to travel, to book and to check into a lodging (hotel, campsite, airbnb), and to ask for accommodation details.

5. INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATIONAL FRENCH

Intermediate Conversational French is for students who have studied French for at least two years. The level of French varies each semester. Usually, students enrolled in this class have visited and/or lived in French speaking countries. The main emphasis of this class is to practice oral comprehension and speaking. Students discuss various topics of everyday life and French culture.

GERMAN LANGUAGE CLASSES

1. GERMAN 1

German 1 (Part A) is intended for complete beginners who have no previous or very limited knowledge of German. Oral comprehension is emphasized through group discussions and interactive exercises. Grammar structures are an integral part of the language learning experience and basic elements will be studied Students in this class will learn how to talk about themselves, their interests, hobbies and families, as well as learn how to order food and drink.

2. GERMAN BEGINNER 2

German Beginner 1 (Part B) is recommended for students who have already taken German beginner 1 (Part A) at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you took German somewhere else, register for this class if you already know some basic phrases and grammatical structures. Students in this class will continue learning the German language, review what they already know, extend their vocabulary, and explore the German culture.

3. GERMAN BEGINNER 3

This is a third and final segment of the German beginner 1 class. It is recommended for students who have taken two sessions of German at Polyglottist Language Academy or one or two short courses somewhere else (approximately 15-17 hours of German).

4. CONVERSATIONAL GERMAN FOR ADVANCED BEGINNERS

This class is recommended for students who want to improve their oral comprehension and speaking skills. It is for students who have taken the German Beginner 1 (Part 2) class and/or German Beginner 2 class at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you have taken German somewhere else, please sign up for this class if you have had at least six months of German (20-25 hours of German).

5. GERMAN 4

This class is recommended for students who have studied German for a brief period of time and/or have visited Germany on a few occasions. Vocabulary, grammar, and oral proficiency are emphasized. Additionally, students will explore German culture, history, and geography. 

6. INTERMEDIATE GERMAN

This class is for students who can understand commonly used expressions, express their thoughts, give personal information, as well as deal with a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and common topics. They should also be able to describe their background and education. During this course, students will improve their communication skills, learn German grammar, and expend their vocabulary.

7. ADVANCED GERMAN

Advanced German is for students who have studied German for at least two years and have learned the fundamentals of German grammar Students will deepen their vocabulary and their grasp of German grammar through conversation, expressing opinions and discussing authentic materials.

Italian Language Classes

1. ITALIAN BEGINNER I

Italian Beginner 1 (Part A) is the first level of Italian at Polyglottist Language Academy. It is recommended for complete beginners, who have no knowledge of Italian.

2. ITALIAN BEGINNER 2

This Italian class is a continuation of Italian Beginner I. It is recommended for students who have taken one or two sessions of Italian at the Polyglottist Language Academy. It is also recommended for students who have taken a short Italian course somewhere else.

3. ITALIAN BEGINNER 3

This class is the final part of the Italian Beginner 1 class. It is for students who have taken two sessions of Italian at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you took Italian somewhere else, please enroll in this class if you have had about 15-20 hours of instruction.

4. ITALIAN BEGINNER 4

Italian Beginner 2 (Part A) is recommended for students who have taken three sessions (6 months) of Italian at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you have studied Italian somewhere else, please sign up for this class if you have studied Italian for approximately 25-30 hours. This class is taught in Italian.

5. ITALIAN BEGINNER 5

This is the second part of the Italian beginner 2 class. If you are coming to us from another language school, sign up for this class if you have had 8 months of Italian (approximately 32-35 hours of instruction).

6. ITALIAN BEGINNER 6

This is class is the last part of the Beginner 2 sequence. This class will prepare you to go to the next level of Italian (intermediate). Sign up for this class if you have had about 10 months of Italian (40-45 hours of instruction).

7. INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN

The Intermediate Italian is for students who have studied Italian for one year. The class is taught in Italian. The focus of this class is on intermediate grammar, but conversational aspects are implemented as well. In this class, students will be discussing topics of everyday life, their interests, and contemporary Italy.

8. PRE-ADVANCED ITALIAN

The Pre-advanced Italian is for students who have studied Italian for at least two years. The class is taught in Italian. The focus of this class is on conversation but grammar topics are implemented as well. In this class, students will be discussing topics of everyday life, their interests, and contemporary Italy.

9. ADVANCED ITALIAN GRAMMAR/ADVANCED ITALIAN CONVERSATION

Students in this class will acquire a thorough understanding of the structure of Italian language and polish their spoken and written skills. They will discuss grammar covering all parts of speech and practice pronunciation and fluent conversation. Through constant practice, students will develop the ability to accumulate a mastery of diverse complex forms so that they are able to combine them in speech and writing. These courses also include short readings of original Italian language texts not yet available in translation. The courses cater to students' interests and integrates translation practice, close readings of Italian poetry, and newspaper articles that are selected through student feedback and input.

1. JAPANESE BEGINNER 1

Japanese Beginner 1 is the first level of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. It is recommended for complete beginners, who have no knowledge of Japanese or students who have very basic knowledge of Japanese. In this course, students will learn basic grammar and vocabulary to be able to understand everyday Japanese and express themselves in Japanese.

2. JAPANESE BEGINNER 2

The Japanese Beginner 2 class is the second part of the Japanese  Beginner classes. Sign up for this class if you have taken one session of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 5-10 hours of instruction total and you know some simple sentence structures with action verbs,  numbers, and basic vocabulary. 

In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana and will start learning Kanji. The class will cover lessons 3 and 4 in Genki 1 textbook.

15. ADVANCED JAPANESE

This course is taught in Japanese. Advanced Japanese is for students who took all 12 beginner levels of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. Students are expected to know the content of both part of Genki textbook. Students have to be able to read and write in Japanese (Hiragana, Katakana, and some Kanji.) The purpose of this class is continue practicing grammar and vocabulary. Students will deepen their vocabulary and their grasp of Japanese grammar through conversation, expressing opinions and discussing authentic materials such as articles, news, films, etc.

14. INTERMEDIATE KOREAN

This course is taught in Korean. Intermediate Korean is for students who took all 12 beginner levels of Korean at Polyglottist Language Academy. The purpose of this class is continue practicing grammar and vocabulary. In this class, students will be able to learn more about Korean culture and discuss it with their classmates.

15. ADVANCED KOREAN

This course is taught in Korean. Advanced Korean is for students who took all 12 beginner levels of Korean at Polyglottist Language Academy. Students will deepen their vocabulary and their grasp of Korean grammar through conversation, expressing opinions and discussing authentic materials such as articles, news, films, etc.

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE CLASSES

1. RUSSIAN BEGINNER I

This course will introduce students to the Russian language and culture. It is intended for complete beginners or students who have had limited exposure to Russian in the past. Students will learn how to read and write the Cyrillic alphabet and how to talk about themselves, their interests, and their everyday lives.

2. RUSSIAN BEGINNER 2

This course is appropriate for students who know how to read and write Cyrillic and know how to have basic conversations about themselves in Russian. Students will expand their vocabulary to talk about the world around them, learn basic grammatical structures like cases, and be able to have longer conversations. The course is conducted almost entirely in Russian. 

3. RUSSIAN BEGINNER 3

Russian Beginner 3 is recommended for students who have taken two sessions of Russian at Polyglottist Language Academy or one or two short courses somewhere else (approximately 10-15 hours of Russian).

4. RUSSIAN BEGINNER 4

Russian Beginner 2 (Part A) is recommended for students who have taken three sessions (6 months) of Russian at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you have studied Russian somewhere else, please sign up for this class if you have studied Russian for approximately 30-35 hours. It is recommended to know the following grammar topics to sign up for this class: present, past, and future tenses of regular Russian verbs; nouns and pronouns in Nominative, Accusative, and Prepositional cases.

5. RUSSIAN INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION

This Russian class is for students who have studied Russian for more than two years. To enroll in this class, students are recommended to have sufficient vocabulary and know major grammar topics to be able to understand and express themselves in Russian. The purpose of this class is to help students to practice their grammar usage in oral Russian and become fluent in Russian.

1. SPANISH BEGINNER 1

This Spanish class is for complete beginners or students who studied Spanish very briefly. In this class, students will learn basic vocabulary and grammar to start effectively communicating in Spanish. Students will explore different topics such as introducing themselves and others, describing their friends and family, talking about their work and interests, ordering food at restaurants, and going shopping in Spanish speaking countries.

4. SPANISH BEGINNER 4

The Spanish Beginner 4 class is for students who have studied Spanish for three sessions or five months (24-26 hours of instruction) at Polyglottist Language Academy. To enroll in this class, students should be able to use the present tense effectively and possess enough vocabulary to be able to express themselves in Spanish on a variety of everyday and cultural topics. This Spanish class will help students increase their vocabulary, learn the necessary grammar to be able to accurately speak in Spanish, and effectively understand oral Spanish. The class is taught completely in Spanish to provide an immersive environment.

7. INTERMEDIATE SPANISH

Intermediate Spanish is for students who have studied Spanish for two years. To enroll in this class, students should have sufficient vocabulary and an understanding of grammar to both express and understand themselves in Spanish. Students are also expected to understand written Spanish. The purpose of this class is to help students polish their grammar usage in oral Spanish and become fluent in Spanish.

8. ADVANCED SPANISH

Advanced Spanish is for Spanish students who have learned the fundamentals of Spanish grammar (present, past, future, subjunctive). Students will deepen their vocabulary and their grasp of Spanish grammar through conversation, expressing opinions and discussing authentic materials such as articles, news, films, and songs.
